Sthala Puranam:
This area of the temple was a forest full of Vilva Trees. Hence it was called as Vilvaaranyam or Vilvavanam. The Sivalingam was inside a snake mound (பாம்பு புற்று). A cow was pouring the Milk every day on the Siva Lingam. The snake mound slowly started disintegrated and the lingam was emerged outside. Earlier the temple was called as Theekkali Vallam. The Ambal's name of this temple was known as Theekkali Ambal ( Jadaakalaabambal) and she was adorned an angry(உக்கரம்) look. The Sthala Puranam says that Sri Adhi Sankarar calm down the Ambal.
Around 4 KM away from this temple there is a hill named "Kanchan Giri". Now it is called Kaanchana Giri. There was a demon named Kanchan was living in the hill. Earlier the priest used to bring water from this temple for the Abishekam and other temple use. Kanchan never allow the priest tho bring water from this hill. He started scaring the priest. The priest prayed Lord Siva for help. On the order of Lord Siva, Nandhikeswarar fought with the demon and destroyed him. Due to this reason the Nandhi of this temple will be facing outside.
Pathigam:
Thirugnanasmbandar sung one pathigam on this temple.
