There are plenty of buses plying to this temple ( thirumulaivayil) from all major bus terminus in Chennai. All buses going to Aavadi will also go to Thirumulaivayil.
There are two Thirumulaivayil in Tamil Nadu, one in the Chola Nadu near Poompugar which is called Thenthirumulaivayil (Southern). The one in Chennai is called Vada Thirumulaivayil(Northern). Both the temples have Mulaikodi (முல்லைகொடி ) as Stalavriksham, hence the name Thirumulaivayil.

· Swamy: Arulmigu, Masilamaniswarar

· Ambal: Arulmigu Kodiedainayagi

· Sthala Viruksham: Mullai Kodi (Jasminum auriculatum)

· Theertham: Palaru, Subramaniaya Theertham

About the temple :
This temple is built in 1.12 acre land with a 7 tier Rajagopuram facing South. Three Pragarams both Swamy and Ambal facing east. In this temple, Ambal is on the right side of the main deity. The reason for this uniqueness has been mentioned in the sthalapuranam. Swamy in this temple is a swayambu lingam and is also theenda thirumeni hence yearly once they will do a sandana kaapu and no abhishegam is offered. There is a scar on the head of the suambulingam. Sandal paste applied through out the year to heal the wound except two days in the month of Chithrai (April - May) on the Sathayam star day.  Worshipping Lord Shiva in this form during these days would relieve the devotee of all sins, it is firmly believed. As no abishek is performed to the Linga, A Padarasa Linga (Mercury Linga) is placed in a separate shrine for Pujas. The Vimana (tower above the sanctum) is of Gajabrushta –  Shape of back side of an elephant.

The sandana kaapu expences are met by Thirupananthazh, Sri Kasi Mutt
The powers of the consort deity, Parvathi is classified as under.

  • Tiruvudai Amman, Melur ( Near Meenjur- Chennai ):  Icha Shakthi
  • Kodiyidai Amman, Tirumullaivayil:   Kriya Shakthi
  • Vadivudai Amman, Tiruvotriyur:      Gnana Shakthi

We heard that all the three deities made by one sculpture. Many believe that worship of all the three Ambals on a Friday with Full moon ( together ) in the same order in the morning, Noon and in the evening is very good and get the grace of all the three Ambals.

The inner prargaram has Narthana ganapathy - Vinayagar, Subramaniar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai. This temple also has a Bikashadanar ( Bikashadanar is again one among the rare idols of Shiva as naked handsome man . His locks and tufts of hairs with mahogany flowers, snake, crescent moon and Ganga. His arms  holding a trident, drum and empty skull for having biksha-the offers. His lower right arm feeds a deer with grass. He wears a padarakshai - wooden sandals. A demon dwarf accompanies Lord with a bowl filled with food of biksha)
The Sanctum has a arthamandapam with two pillars of Velaruku (Devine herbal tree) - வெள்ளெருக்குத்தூண். The details of the pillar is given in the Sthala Puranam.

Sthala Puranam
In ancient times, the forest surrounding Tirumullaivayil was occupied by two Kurumbars named  Onan and Kanthan. They were living in a fort called Kantha Fort. Inside the fort one could find coral planquin and two huge pillars made of Vellerukku. The main doors of the fort had many brass bells. They were worshiping Bairavar.

The Chozha King Thondaiman  was the emperor for Kanchi and 32 other divisions which included the forest adjoining Thirumullaivayil. One night when the king went for hunting in the forest he could hear the sound of bells which was created while closing the main door of the fort. The king mistook the sound as temple bell sound.  With his few soldiers he proceeded to the side from where he heard the sound. Seeing this from a distance the demons (Onan and Kanthan) mistook that the king is coming there to war against them. With their full army they defeated the king.

The king was upset and while returning back in the forest his elephant's leg was entangled in the mullai creapers. In order to relieve the elephant from the creeper the king tried to clear the shrubs with his sword. To his astonishment he saw the creeper was bleeding blood.  On clearing the shrubs the king was surprised to see a Siva Lingam  with a cut on top. Thondaman was a staunch Sivanadiar. On realising the reason for the bleeding the king decided to kill him self and took the sword to cut his head. At that moment the Lord Siva appeared before him stopped the king's action and blessed him. Siva told the king Thondman that nothing has happened to him and he is " MASILLA MANI" (மாசில்லாமணி ). It is believed that the Lord supported him in destroying the Kurumbars by sending the Nandi. The Nandi in all Siva temples will face only the lord, but the Nandi in this temple faces east ward against Lord Siva.

Sundarar mentioned about this incident in his Thevara Pathigam:

சொல்லரும்  புகழான்  தொண்டைமான்  களிற்றைச்
சூழ்கொடி  முல்லையால்  மட்டிட்டு
எல்லையில்  இன்பம்  அவன்பெற  வெளிப்பட்
டருளிய  இறைவனே       ---------------------- Sundarar  7th Thirumurai

Also this is one of the few temples where the positions of the Lords are inter-changed. This is believed to be because of the urgency in providing darshan(view) to the king. To act quickly and to stop the king from killing himself Siva appeared immediately alone without Ambal and Ambal later came and stood next to Siva on the right side. This is the reason unlike other Sivan sannithi the Ambal shrine is on the right side ( வலப்பக்கம் ) of  Swamy shrine and both facing east.
