Indira, the king of devalokam had a boon to take to any form. His had a liking for Akalya, wife of Maharshi Gautama. It was a sin. He took the form of a rooster and crowing near the hermitage of the Rishi indicating the dawn of the day. Rishi set out in the belief that the day is dawn. Waiting for such a chance, Indira immediately took the form of Maharshi, entered in to the Ashram and behaved badly with Akalya as Rishi himself.
However, sensing something was wrong, Maharsi Gautama returned to the Ashram and saw Indira escaping as a cat. He cursed him to have eyes throughout the body and also Akalya to become a rock. Akalya came out of the sin during Rama avathar with his blessings.
Budhan also worshiped Siva in this temple and got his blessings.
The temple was built during Chozha kingdom. About 50 years back renovation was done by Devakottai Chettiars.
