Though it is Siva temple, only after arthi to Thirumal they serve Sadari and Theertham for all devotees as in other Vaishnava temples. This is apart from serving Vibuthi and Kungumam.
Lord Vishnu applied his Chakrayudham on Sage Thutheesi for the sake of a king named Kuban . When it touched the divine body of the sage, it lost the power. Worried Lord Vishnu consulted with Devas and came to know that Lord Siva has the Sudharsana Chakram which he created to destroy demon Chalandarasuran. Lord Vishnu came to this place and worshipped Lord Siva with thousand lotus flowers every day. To test the determination of Vishnu, Lord Siva caused shortage of one lotus flower. To make up the shortage, Lord Vishnu immediately plucked his own eye and offered it in the puja. Pleased with his determination, Lord Siva restored his eye saying that “as you offered your eye for a lotus flower, you will have the eye with lotus beauty and you will be known as Senthamaraikkannan. Lord Siva also gave his Sudharsana Chakram to Vishnu. Lord Siva further added that those who chanted his 1000 (Sahasara Namam) names or a few of them chanted by Lord Vishnu would be blessed with salvation. Lord Vishnu prayed to Lord Siva that the benefit of praying in many temples should be granted to the devotees who prayed here. Lord Siva assured the boon to Lord Vishnu.
