The temple before renovation

Location:

Ilampaiyangkottur is situated in the Chennai - Arakkonam railway rout. It is 11KM south of Kadambathur raiway station. From Perambakkam bus stand it will be 5 KM. It is 2 KM south west of Thiruvirkkolam ( Koovam ) Temple. This temple is 13th temple of Thonda Nadu Paadal petra Sthalam

Reason for the name:

Arambas-virgins of the celestial world, prayed to Lord to help them keep their alluring beauty perennially.  Lord appeared before them as Yoga Dakshinamurthy and granted their boon. He is also praised as Arambeswarar as he graced the Aramba women belonging to the celestial world.  The place was named after this event as Arambayankattoor that changed as Ilumpaiyankattur in the days that followed.

Sthala Viruksham : Vilvam and Maramalligai (Jasmine)



Temple:

This temple was built in a 100 acre land facing east with single pragaram.. Lord Siva the moolavar is a Suyambu Lingam and is untouchable (தீண்டா திருமேனி). Ambal is in standing poisture facing south. In the pragaram the sannithis of Rambapureeswarar, Yoga Dakshinamurthy, Kuruntha Vinayakar, Thirumal, Brahma, Murugan, Sandeekeswarar, Durgai, Bairavar and Suryan are there. Chandra Theertha Thirukkulam is on the south side of the temple.

 

Speciality of the Temple:

The virgins (Arambas) of the celestial world worshiped in this temple. Thrugnanasambanthar sung one pathigam on this deity and the temple. Thirunavukkarasar mentioned about this temple in the Shetrakovai Thiruthandagam. Saint Tirugnanasambandar was returning through this way after visiting various Siva temples.  Lord Siva in the guise of an old man asked the saint to sing in  praise of  Lord who was in that place, but the saint could not see and returned. Siva tried with the saint in the guise of a small boy. But the saint did not sing. Lord again intercepted the saint in the form a cow, showed the place and insisted his demand.  On realising the fact, Thirugnanasambandar  was too happy and sang in praise of the Lord.

Sthala Puranam:

 

Lord Siva on his march to destroy the demons to protect the Devas, he passed through this place, once a forest of dense Jasmine trees.  Lord Vinayaka broke the axis of Lord’s chariot as he passed without informing Him. ( This is related to the Sthala Puranam of the Temple in Achirupakkam, Thonda Nattu sthalam).  Lord Vishnu held the car from falling down.  The Sarakondrai garland on Shiva’s neck fell down and became a suyambu linga at this holy place.

நீறணிந்தேறுகந்தேறிய நிமலன் 

கலையினார்மடப்பிணை துணையோடுந்த்துயிலக்

கானலம்பெடைபுல்கிக் கணமயிலாலும்

இலையினார்பைம்பொழி விலம் பயங்கோட்டூர்

இருக்கையாப் பேணியென் எழில் கொள்வது இயல்பே

பாலனாம் விருத்தனாம் பசுபதிதானாம்                .

பண்டுவெங்கூற்றுதைத் தடியவர்ககருளும்

காலனாமெனதுரை  தனதுரையாகக்

கனலெரியங்கையி லேந்திய கடவுள் 

நீல மாமலர்ச்சுனை  வண்டு பண்செய்ய

நீர் மலர்க்குவளைக டாது  விண்டோங்கும்

ஏலநாறும் பொழி விலம் பையங் கோட்டூர் 

ரிருக்கையாப் பேணியென் நெழில் கொள்வது இயல்பே
