Thonda Nadu Temple 13. Ilampayangkottur

SIVAYA NAMA

Ilampaiyangkottur

The temple before renovation

Location:

Ilampaiyangkottur is situated in the Chennai - Arakkonam railway rout. It is 11KM south of Kadambathur raiway station. From Perambakkam bus stand it will be 5 KM. It is 2 KM south west of Thiruvirkkolam ( Koovam ) Temple. This temple is 13th temple of Thonda Nadu Paadal petra Sthalam

Reason for the name:

Arambas-virgins of the celestial world, prayed to Lord to help them keep their alluring beauty perennially.  Lord appeared before them as Yoga Dakshinamurthy and granted their boon. He is also praised as Arambeswarar as he graced the Aramba women belonging to the celestial world.  The place was named after this event as Arambayankattoor that changed as Ilumpaiyankattur in the days that followed.

Swamy:  Arulmigu Arambeswarar ( Deivanayageswarar)
Ambal :  Arulmigu Kanakagujambikai
Theertham : Chndra Theertham
Sthala Viruksham : Vilvam and Maramalligai (Jasmine)

Temple:

This temple was built in a 100 acre land facing east with single pragaram.. Lord Siva the moolavar is a Suyambu Lingam and is untouchable (தீண்டா திருமேனி). Ambal is in standing poisture facing south. In the pragaram the sannithis of Rambapureeswarar, Yoga Dakshinamurthy, Kuruntha Vinayakar, Thirumal, Brahma, Murugan, Sandeekeswarar, Durgai, Bairavar and Suryan are there. Chandra Theertha Thirukkulam is on the south side of the temple.

Speciality of the Temple:

The virgins (Arambas) of the celestial world worshiped in this temple. Thrugnanasambanthar sung one pathigam on this deity and the temple. Thirunavukkarasar mentioned about this temple in the Shetrakovai Thiruthandagam. Saint Tirugnanasambandar was returning through this way after visiting various Siva temples.  Lord Siva in the guise of an old man asked the saint to sing in  praise of  Lord who was in that place, but the saint could not see and returned. Siva tried with the saint in the guise of a small boy. But the saint did not sing. Lord again intercepted the saint in the form a cow, showed the place and insisted his demand.  On realising the fact, Thirugnanasambandar  was too happy and sang in praise of the Lord.

Sthala Puranam:

Lord Siva on his march to destroy the demons to protect the Devas, he passed through this place, once a forest of dense Jasmine trees.  Lord Vinayaka broke the axis of Lord’s chariot as he passed without informing Him. ( This is related to the Sthala Puranam of the Temple in Achirupakkam, Thonda Nattu sthalam).  Lord Vishnu held the car from falling down.  The Sarakondrai garland on Shiva’s neck fell down and became a suyambu linga at this holy place.

Thonda Nadu Temple 12. Thiruvooral ( Thakkolam )

SIVAYA NAMA

THIRUVURAL (THAKKOLAM)

Raja Gopuram

Location:

Thiruvural (Thakkolam) is 13KM Southeast of Arakkonam. It is on the rail route of Kanchipuram to Arakkonam. The temple is 5 KM from the Thakkolam Railway station. There are frequent buses from Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanjipuram and Arakkonam.

Reason for the name:

As water keep pouring from the Nandigeswarar's mouth of this temple and water spring from the feet of the moolavar,  this place is called as Thiruvural. As the sthala viruksham is thakkolam, this place is also known as Thakkolam. One another reason was as Dakshan (Thakkan) cried loudly for the punishment he suffered for conducting a yagna in an unorthodox manner (Thakkan’s Olam – crying) in this place.

Vinayagar

Sthala Pooranam:

Theerkadar was born to Sage Udhadhi the brother of Viyazhan (Guru) and Mamatha.  One day Theerkadar saw divine cow Kamadenu near his hermitage.  He requested the cow to be with him for conducting a yagna and to take care of the invitees.  Kamadenu said that it could not oblige him without the permission of Lord Indira.  The sage got angry and cursed the cow to become an ordinary and average animal losing its super powers.  The cow in turn cursed the Theerkadar to be engaged in menial jobs (Sandalar).

Sage Udhathi was sad to see his son doing menial jobs.  He came to this place as advised by Maharshi Naradhar and worshipped Lord Siva.  Lord Siva advised Sage Udhathi to perform penance on Nandhi and perform abishekam to him with the Ganga water springing from Nandhi.  The sage got relieved his son Theerkadar from the curse.

Kamadenu too worshipped here by pouring the milk on the Lord and was restored to its original form and power. On hearing this Lord Indira also came here and worshipped Lord Siva.

The Lingam worshipped by the Sage Udhadhi is in the northern side of the temple as Gangatheeswarar temple and opposite to the temple is Ganga theertha kulam.

Thakkan gave all his 27 daughters to marry Chandran. After marriage he showed interest to only one wife Rohini and the rest he ignored. Thakkan got wild and cursed Chandran with deadly skin disease. Chandran worshipped in this temple and after taking bath in the Ganga Theertha kulam he was relieved out of the curse.

This temple is one of the important Guru Parihara Sthalam in Tamilnadu and near Chennai.

Sthala Puranam :

Lord Vishnu applied his Chakrayudham on Sage Thutheesi for the sake of a king named Kuban.  When it touched the divine body of the sage, it lost the power.  Worried Lord Vishnu consulted with Devas and came to know that Lord Siva has the Sudharsana Chakram which he created to destroy demon Chalandarasuran.  Lord Vishnu came to this place and worshipped Lord Siva with thousand lotus flowers every day.  To test the determination of Vishnu, Lord Siva caused shortage of one lotus flower.  To make up the shortage, Lord Vishnu immediately plucked his own eye and offered it in the puja.  Pleased with his determination, Lord Siva restored his eye saying that “as you offered your eye for a lotus flower, you will have the eye with lotus beauty and you will be known as Senthamaraikkannan.  Lord Siva also gave his  Sudharsana Chakram to Vishnu.  Lord Siva further added that those who chanted his 1000 (Sahasara Namam) names or a few of them chanted by Lord Vishnu would be blessed with salvation.  Lord Vishnu prayed to Lord Siva that the benefit of praying in many temples should be granted to the devotees who prayed here.  Lord Siva assured the boon to Lord Vishnu.

Natarajar

Location:

This temple is close to Kanchipuram. On the way to Kalavai, Vembakkam and Perungkattur you can find Thirupanangadu cross ( Junction ). The temple is 2 KM from this point. Cars can go up to the temple.

Reason for the Name:

As Palm trees were around this place and as the sthala viruksham is also Palm tree this place named Thirupanangattur. As this place is closer to Vempakkam ( Vanparthan ), this is called Vanparthan Panangattur. There is one other place (Padal petra sthalam) called Puravar Panangattur in Nadu Naadu ( நடு நாடு  ).

Temple:

Small and beautiful temple in 19 Cent land. There is a three tier Kopuram in front of Krupanatheswarar Sannithi. The main entrance is opposite Krubapureeswarar shrine. While Sage Agasthya installed Thalapureeswarar, his disciple Pulasthya installed another one nearby named Krubapureeswarar on a square peetam.  Both are revered as the presiding deities as one Siva.  Thalapureeswarar, worshipped by sage Agsthya is worshipped as the first and prominent deity. Both are under Gajabrushta vimanam – roof above the sanctum with three Kalasams (கலசம்) on each. There is only one Palli room ( பள்ளி  அரை  ). Dhaksnamurthy in the Krupanatheeswarar shrine is a unique one. Right hand hanging down and the right hand kept on the folded right leg showing the Abayahastham (அபயஹஸ்தம்)  with the sinmuthirai ( சின்முத்திரை)
On the south pragaram we can see Nalvar and Sekilar peruman, on the west pragaram Vinayakar, Subramaniar and Lakshmi shrines are there. On the east pragaram Natarajar, Amirthavalli Ambal and Krupanayagi Ambal shrines are there facing south. Palli arai also there in the same pragaram. Near the Sthala Viruksham Kodai Muneeswarar shrine is there.

Sthala Puranam:

Sundarar was on his way to this temple  from Kancheepuram.  When it was midday, he and his followers were hungry and became tired.  Lord Shiva came there as an old man and served them food.  Sundarar asked him for water.  The old man said that he and his men would have it and moved away.  Surprisingly a spring came up there with sweet water.  When Sundarar asked him who he was, the old man simply disappeared saying he was a resident of Panangadu ( பனங்காடு  ) who earlier stopped Sundarar's marriage.  Sundarar, with the privilege of a friend sang in praise of Siva.  The spring created by the Lord is a little away from the temple.  It never goes dry.  Special pujas are performed here as  Kattamudhu (கட்டமுது) during the Brahmmotsavam festival.
